Darren is a talent manager with three decades of experience developing talent within the exceptionally competitive film and television industry, underpinned by a strong academic background and business skills. Between his career and a degree in economics and political science from McGill University, as well as an MBA specializing in finance from the Daniels College of Business, he can analyze financial statements, manage budgets responsibly, and bring sound judgment and close attention to detail to get results.
His motivation to run for School Board comes from his firsthand knowledge of how essential the performing and visual arts are to a child’s education. Darren believes arts education builds confidence and creativity while helping young people become more culturally aware, open-minded, and empathetic. These qualities are especially important in a diverse and evolving city like Vancouver. He wants to ensure that arts programs are supported and strengthened, and not viewed as expendable during difficult budget decisions.
Darren’s ideas are not limited to the arts, however. He wants to maintain the School Liaison Officer program to support student safety, oppose the sale of VSB land and assets to private entities, and pursue childcare initiatives as well as other ways to use VSB infrastructure to support families.
Darren is the father of two teenagers, and his wife is a psychologist at BC Children’s Hospital. In his spare time he enjoys cooking, playing Scrabble and other board games, watching movies, and spending time with Leo, his family dog. He looks forward to giving back to the community that has given him so much.
