Vancouver Liberals Commit to Hiring 400 Front-Line Workers to Improve City Services
Kareem Allam, Vancouver Liberals pledge to hire 400 CUPE employees to improve front-line service quality and responsiveness
VANCOUVER, BC (14 September 2026) - Mayoral Candidate Kareem Allam and the Vancouver Liberals are committed to hiring 400 unionized CUPE workers to improve the services people in Vancouver rely on every day. Our front-line workers include but are not limited to those our residents see on the streets, in their parks, at their community centres, in sanitation, and in their libraries.
“I’ve heard loud and clear from you about the poor state and condition of our parks, the number of potholes that we see on our streets, missed garbage pickups, and dirty sidewalks. I’ve heard from parents about shrinking library hours,” said Allam. “I want great services here in the City of Vancouver, and that starts with hiring workers.”
“We’re going to pay for this by ending the practice of hiring consultants and managers who do nothing more than manage other managers,” explained Allam.“Last year, Ken Sim’s ABC government spent more money on consultants than they did on parks,” said Allam.
The consultant reports for the City of Vancouver included reports for transportation, engineering, housing, parks, workflow optimization, and even public relations consultants. Allam says, “Having read many of those reports, the number one recommendation from these consultants is to do another consulting report. To me, that’s unacceptable. This is about priorities.”
Requisitioning for 400 CUPE workers will be a day-one priority for a Vancouver Liberal government, because Vancouver residents deserve city services that work.
