KAREEM ALLAM, VANCOUVER LIBERALS ANNOUNCE MICHELLE MUNGALL AND ARMINDER RANDHAWA AS HONOURARY CO-CHAIRS FOR MUNICIPAL ELECTION CAMPAIGN
Vancouver, BC - Mayoral Candidate Kareem Allam and the Vancouver Liberals today announced that Michelle Mungal and Arminder Randhawa are joining the Vancouver Liberals as Honorary Co-Chairs for the municipal election campaign. Mungall was the Minister of Energy, Mines, and Petroleum Resources of British Columbia from 2017-2020 under John Horgan’s NDP government. Randhawa is a former BC NDP Provincial Executive Member who also served on the Board of Variance for the City of Vancouver. She has long been involved in municipal politics and has years of advocacy experience pushing for legal and policy reforms around intimate partner violence, police responses, and the inclusion of women and children’s safety in discussions around public safety.
“We’re incredibly grateful that Michelle and Arminder have joined our team. These are strong leaders with tremendous experience volunteering their time and expertise to help guide our campaign as we approach election day,” said Allam. “Their involvement helps highlight that members of the Vancouver Liberals are uniting behind the strength of ideas and not ideologies. Our team is diverse and includes business leaders, academics and more representation from labour than the other parties combined.”
Mungall and Randhawa have echoed these sentiments, with Mungall stating “I’m impressed with Kareem’s ideas prioritizing frontline workers and I’m impressed with the hardworking attitude every single one of the candidates is bringing to the table."
"I want to see a thriving Vancouver that doesn’t leave anyone behind, and I have seen the broad-based coalition that Kareem has built," adds Randhawa. "He is a thoughtful and pragmatic leader who brings people together and that is what we need at this moment to defeat Ken Sim. The diversity of the team speaks to me alongside the candidates’ range of experiences. I have been involved in a lot of campaigns and this one is the most open and welcoming to different ideas.”
Moira Stillwell, a City Councillor candidate for the Vancouver Liberals, was a minister for the BC Liberal government while Mungall was an MLA. “I remember my time as a cabinet minister during Michelle’s first term as an MLA where she was my official critic, and I’m very happy to welcome her to the campaign. People are crossing partisan divides to work together - people are tired of polarization in politics, and finally we’re talking about unity,” explained Stillwell.
The Vancouver Liberals’ strength in unifying those who come from different backgrounds highlights an important difference between themselves and Ken Sim’s current ABC government. “Ken Sim can’t get along with other politicians and city staff, much less his own team. People who have been previous adversaries have come to rally around a vision and a platform under the Vancouver Liberal banner. We are going to continue to reach across the aisle to represent everyone, from frontline workers to labourers to accountants, while Sim continues to close his door in the face of others.” said Allam.
