Press Release - Vancouver Liberals Support the School Liaison Officer Program
Kareem Allam, Vancouver Liberals support the continuance and evolution of the School Liaison Officer program to maintain safety in schools
VANCOUVER, BC - Today Kareem Allam and the Vancouver Liberals announce their commitment to the School Liaison Officer (SLO) program that was re-implemented by current School Board Chair and Vancouver Liberal City Councillor candidate Victoria Jung.
The program employs VPD officers in schools to maintain safe environments, and to additionally provide education, mentorship, and support to students. It is centered around relationship building and diversion from the criminal justice system. The program was cancelled in 2021 but under Jung’s leadership, previous concerns were addressed and the program was reimagined, commencing operations in 2023.
“It’s been a success in making all students feel safer in their schools, has been improving education surrounding drug use, and is reducing incidents of crime at our schools. It’s also been a success in chasing drug dealers and those that are looking to exploit our children off of school grounds. As needs are identified, the program is updated with the safety of students always in mind,” explained Allam.
The Vancouver Liberals want to ensure that the SLO program survives and continues to improve but COPE, OneCity, and the Green Party voted against its reimplementation. From September 2023 to June 2025, school staff and administrators made 1,117 reports through the program, approximately half of which resulted in formal reports. The value of the SLO program is clear.
“I’m asking the voters to consider the consequences of a COPE, OneCity, and Green government on School Liaison Officers. The Vancouver Liberals will safeguard this important program that protects our children,” said Allam.
