Statement from Kareem Allam on William Azaroff Withdrawing from the Mayoral Race
“William Azaroff has brought a lot to this campaign, and I want to thank him for putting himself forward and for the ideas he has contributed to the debate about Vancouver’s future.
William and I don’t agree on everything. But there is a lot we do agree on.
We both believe Vancouver needs to build a lot more housing and become a city where working people and young families can actually afford to live. We both believe in better public transit, more childcare, strong public services and good jobs. And we both believe City Hall has to do a much better job of delivering front-line services for people.
I also liked William’s very practical proposal to synchronize the traffic lights on downtown one-way streets. This would keep traffic moving more smoothly, but at a slower speed that makes our streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists. It’s a smart idea, and exactly the kind of practical improvement City Hall should be making.
William has consistently talked about building a city that works for everyone. I respect that.
I’m running because I think Vancouver needs a mayor who can bring people together across traditional political divides and build a broader coalition for change.
There is a place in this coalition for progressives, moderates, labour, small businesses, renters, homeowners, young families and people who simply want a better-run city.
We may come from different political traditions. But we know our city deserves better. On many of the biggest challenges facing Vancouver, there is much more that brings us together than divides us.
I wish William very well, and I thank him for the contribution he has made to this campaign.”
