Press Release - Vancouver Liberals Support the New Vancouver Art Gallery
Kareem Allam, Vancouver Liberals will support construction of a Vancouver Art Gallery and Vancouver’s arts and culture community at-large
VANCOUVER, BC - Mayoral Candidate Kareem Allam and the Vancouver Liberals today announced their support for the new Vancouver Art Gallery and the Vancouver arts community at large. Vancouver has the greatest percentage of artists of any Canadian city and the Vancouver Liberals view the new Vancouver Art Gallery as an essential component in uplifting and celebrating the city’s arts and culture community.
“The Vancouver Art Gallery is one of Vancouver’s most well-known and recognizable institutions, and there is a promising path forward for the creation of the new Gallery,” said Allam. “Metropolitan art galleries contribute greatly to their local economies due to the interest of residents and the tourism industry, and the Vancouver Art Gallery is no exception. It works with local artist communities, including those in the Indigenous community, to showcase diverse art and artists, and create a unique platform for international reach and recognition.”
Vancouver’s arts and culture community is woven into the city’s fabric beyond the Vancouver Art Gallery. Artists play important roles in ancillary industries such as Vancouver’s video game and film industries. Art also enriches the city’s shared culture and can contribute to the betterment of mental health. The Vancouver Liberals plan to support the arts and culture community by opening artist land reserves, creating a Vancouver Arts Council, and improving the affordability of the city.
The new Vancouver Art Gallery has a promising outlook. The Gallery’s 2026 KPMG-audited financial statements show a strong position for the construction of the new gallery and the Vancouver Liberals are prepared to help bring the project to completion.
“We will work to help bring the new Vancouver Art Gallery to the citizens of Vancouver as quickly as possible. Many don’t know that the Mayor of Vancouver is an ex-officio trustee of the Vancouver Art Gallery’s board of directors, and I will use that position to help the gallery be brought to fruition,” explained Allam.
