Press Release - Vancouver Liberals Will Keep Sewage and E.Coli Out of False Creek

Kareem Allam, Vancouver Liberals will accelerate Vancouver’s plan to segregate rainwater and sewage systems to make False Creek and Vancouver’s beaches safer

VANCOUVER, BC - Mayoral Candidate Kareem Allam and the Vancouver Liberals have today recommitted to making Vancouver’s beaches safer for public use, by accelerating timelines in Vancouver’s wastewater segregation project. Currently, Vancouver’s drainage doesn’t separate rainwater from sewage and plumbing in residential and commercial buildings, meaning that our wastewater ends up directly in False Creek which can result in contamination of water at our beaches.

“Throughout this year’s FIFA celebrations, our residents and visitors weren’t able to use Vancouver’s beaches at the mouth of False Creek,” stated Allam. “Unsafe E. Coli levels meant that the waters had to be closed, following heavy rainfall prior to the celebrations. Supporting beaches and their use is one of our core priorities, and making the waters safe to use is a part of that plan.”

For many years, the City of Vancouver has had a target of 2050 for segregated sewers but projections based off of current funding levels indicate that it will take until 2070 for the project to be completed - well behind schedule. If elected, the Vancouver Liberals will fund the plan so that the project is completed by 2040.

“We understand that 2040 isn’t right around the corner, but ensuring the Healthy Waters Plan is appropriately funded will mean that we have cleaner, safer beaches 30 years sooner than if Ken Sim and ABC remain in government. Beaches are a special place for our residents and visitors, and we’re taking steps like eliminating parking fees to make sure they’re accessible to all. But that access doesn’t mean anything if we can’t actually use them,” explained Allam.
