Press Release - Vancouver Liberals Will Reduce Traffic and Congestion

Kareem Allam, Vancouver Liberals will support alternative means of transportation and improve project planning.

VANCOUVER, BC - Mayoral Candidate Kareem Allam and the Vancouver Liberals have committed to addressing the high traffic and congestion volumes that slow down Vancouver’s streets through supporting public transit and carefully planning major roadworks and infrastructure projects.

“The best way to make traffic move more quickly and reduce congestion is to take as many cars off the road as possible, and the best way to get cars off the road is to give people viable alternate means of transportation,” said Allam. “We can build a transportation system that supports drivers by supporting our cyclists, our transit riders, and those who walk to their destinations. It’s a system where everyone wins.”

Allam has indicated that he will make TransLink meeting attendance a high priority to make sure that transportation files are pushed forward to completion. Communication between the City of Vancouver and TransLink has faltered at the highest levels of government due to Ken Sim’s absconding from many inter-organizational meetings.

The Vancouver Liberals will also ensure that city project planning is planned in a way that minimizes traffic. By way of example, there are concurrent projects happening on Oak, Cambie, and Granville Streets meaning that three of our major arteries have lane reductions and delays concurrently. Projects should be managed in such a way that our arteries can take on the added volume of traffic caused by the closures of nearby or parallel roads.

“Right now, the left hand of the city isn’t talking to the right hand of the city. We need planning when it comes to road closures and every other aspect of our transportation system. The less time you spend on the road, the more time you spend doing your favourite activities or spending time with friends and family,” explained Allam.
