Press Release - Vancouver Liberals Will Reform Street Parking
Kareem Allam, Vancouver Liberals commit to parking system reforms including eliminating parking fees at beaches and community centres, and reviewing two hour parking limits
VANCOUVER, BC - Mayoral Candidate Kareem Allam and the Vancouver Liberals have today affirmed their plans to improve Vancouver’s parking system to make it more affordable and practical.
Within the first year of a Liberal government, parking fees at beaches and community centres will be eliminated, and later on there will be amendments to the 2-hour parking restriction system.
“Having to pay $10 to go to the beach for a few hours just doesn’t make sense. We want to make public facilities and spaces more affordable and accessible for all of Vancouver’s residents, and removing parking fees is one of the ways that we’re going to do that,” stated Allam.
The Vancouver Liberals also intend to review other parking restrictions that exist across the city. Currently, the majority of paid parking in Vancouver has a two hour limit. “Parking making it more difficult to spend time with friends and family or use public spaces is frustrating and impractical. It should support what Vancouverites are doing, not restricting it,” said Allam. “If elected, we will review these parking restrictions to make them work better for our residents.”
The Vancouver Liberals will also look to implement business-friendly parking where appropriate, such as free 15 minute parking in high throughput areas. “Many residents choose to go to large grocery stores instead of smaller community stores because they have to pay for parking. We can support small businesses by getting more people through their doors with targeted parking changes,” Allam further explained.
