A proud Strathcona resident, Shayla brings expertise in community engagement, social impact, sport and recreation, and education.
Shayla is passionate about investing in and revitalizing recreational centres and green spaces that reflect the diverse needs of Vancouver communities, while also helping bring back fun, accessible, and affordable festivals that create opportunities for connection across the city.
In her professional life, Shayla is a local educator, founder of PLANher Consulting, and a public historian specializing in Black history in British Columbia. She has spent the last several years leading work across education, sport, and community development; including developing curriculum resources for the British Columbia Ministry of Education and Child Care, creating educational experiences connected to Hogan’s Alley history, advising organizations on equity and community engagement, and working with organizations including Whitecaps FC, Speed Skating Canada, Boccia Canada, and youth-serving initiatives across the province. Through her work, Shayla has focused on creating spaces where people feel represented, supported, and connected to their communities
Shayla has been a longtime advocate for sport and supporting women and girls of all ages in high-level athletics. She has seen firsthand the dramatic impact that sport can have on young lives… building confidence, leadership skills, belonging, mentorship opportunities, and pathways that extend far beyond the game itself. Recreation should be an accessible opportunity that strengthens individuals and entire communities.
She believes Vancouver can be a place where young people have meaningful ways to engage with their city, strengthening their sense of belonging and creating reasons for future generations to stay, contribute, and build their lives here.
Outside of work, Shayla enjoys running and walking the Seawall, playing basketball at Kits Beach, and supporting local festivals and community events.
As part of the Vancouver Liberals team, Shayla hopes to empower communities to use their voices and ensure investments reach people and neighbourhoods that have historically faced barriers to access. She is committed to strengthening recreation opportunities, preserving green spaces, and helping create a city where Vancouverites feel seen, supported, and connected.
